Seymour uses explosive plays, stingy defense to beat BNL

BEDFORD — For the first 22 minutes of Seymour’s game at Bedford North Lawrence, the scoreboard didn’t see much action as both teams were scoreless.

Then on a third down with six yards to go, quarterback Bret Perry found Kyle Hileman for a 67-yard touchdown.

One minute-and-a-half later, the Owls used a trick play, bringing Will Gray on an end-around and having him throw the ball to a wide open Jack Pennington for a 42-yard touchdown.

What seemed like a game that would be a 0-0 draw heading into halftime, the Owls struck with two chunk plays to lead 14-0 at the half, and that sparked Seymour to a 27-6 victory over the Stars on Friday night.

“A win like this, a consecutive win, a win hostile territory built huge confidence for us,” head coach Tyson Moore said.

Although the offensive plays put the points on the board, it was Seymour’s defense that once again did a stellar job.

They held the Stars scoreless for the first 24 minutes despite having key players — Treyton McCormick and Owen Anderson — go down in the secondary.

“We were lights out,” Moore said about his defense.

The Owls got the ball first to start the second half and took full advantage. They methodically marched down the field on a six-minute drive, capped off by a 10-yard touchdown run from Cam Wheeler.

The PAT snap was fumbled, so the Owls took a 20-0 lead.

“It was big,” Moore said. “We needed at least a first down, and we came up big. We saw what they had, we took advantage of it with a route and Jack ran his butt off and got wide open.”

The Stars got their first points of the game with 3:03 left in the third quarter as Memphis Louden found Ryker Hughes for a 26-yard touchdown. The Owls blocked the extra point, so they stayed in front 20-6.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Seymour had a fourth down with nine yards to go. Perry dropped back, scrambled to his left and found Pennington for a 34-yard touchdown.

It gave the Owls a 27-6 lead and put the game out of reach.

Head coach Tyson Moore said after the game he had two game balls. One was for the whole defensive side of the ball, and the other was for Seymour’s offensive line, that really stepped up in the second half as the Owls’ ground game got going.

Nick Wheeler rushed 17 times for 107 yards.

Evan Smith led Seymour with eight tackles, two assists, one tackle-for-loss and he blocked the PAT after BNL’s only touchdown.

“Evan was all over the field,” Moore said. “He played like a man possessed. There’s not enough good things you can say about some of those guys.”

Curtis Burke had six tackles and two assists for the Owls as well.

Perry threw for 214 yards and two touchdowns, and Pennington caught six balls for 140 yards and two scores.

With the win, the Owls are now 3-2 overall and 3-1 in the Hoosier Hills Conference. Columbus East is in first place at 3-0 in the HHC, but Seymour is right there. Moore said the team just has to focus on themselves the rest of the way.

That starts with next week, where Seymour will head to Blevins Stadium for the annual Jackson Bowl against the 4-1 Brownstown Central Braves.

“We got a lot of momentum, and we have to take that momentum into next week,” Moore said.
