Sacrifices remembered

Thumbs up to the organizers and participants in the 77th annual V-J Day celebration Sunday at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1925 in Seymour. A related thumbs up to those who attended the event, which is designed to remember the sacrifices servicemen and servicewomen — past and present — have made to keep this nation free. Seymour has recognized V-J Day since 1946 to celebrate Japan surrendering to the Allies in World War II on Aug. 14, 1945. There used to be a parade, but in recent years, the event has been changed to a program and a dinner at the post.

On a mission

Thumbs up to the 18 people from Seymour Christian Church who spent July 16 to 23 in Navarette, Dominican Republic. The group, which also included 13 members of Victory Christian Church in Franklin, led a two-day women’s conference that drew about 65 people, spent five days on construction and two days conducting sports camps and led a Sunday service at one of missionary Michell Marte’s churches.

A similar thumbs up to Jaredith Mize with The Tabernacle at Sandy Creek and Ignacio Muniz and LeTisha Garcia from Iglesia Betesda — both Seymour churches — who recently returned from a five-day mission trip to rural Guatemala through Mano a Mano. Translated to Hand to Hand, the ongoing program helps people in Seymour and in areas of Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras who have connections to the Asamblea Apostólica church here.

Marvelous job

Thumbs up to the city of Seymour and Duke Energy for replacing the light poles on Western Parkway after a recent storm. They worked very hard and cleaned it up fast. They did such a marvelous job.

Responders recognized

Thumbs up to the Jackson County Chamber for organizing and conducting the inaugural Jackson County First Responders Breakfast on Tuesday morning at Pewter Hall in Brownstown. During the event, chamber Director Dan Robison announced all of the proceeds generated from the sponsors will go toward starting a First Responder Training and Equipment Scholarship through the Chamber Foundation.
