Bridge Street paving project approved

BROWNSTOWN — Bridge Street from the entrance of Brownstown Park to Ewing Street will be repaved in the coming weeks.

The work includes the portion that was dug up in 2021 to provide utilities and storm drainage for the town’s new street department building. That portion of the road, just west of the park entrance, has been creating issues for motorists since before the beginning of the new year.

Councilman Mark Reynolds, who said Bridge Street could be the “most griped about road” in town, gave an update on the project during Monday’s town council meeting at the town hall. He reported he had received two quotes for the work that requires the milling and repaving of 1,200 feet of Bridge Street.

All-Star Paving Inc. of Seymour submitted the low quote for the project of $49,483.84, Reynolds said. The other bidder, Dave O’Mara Contractor Inc., submitted a quote of $50,162.90.

Reynolds said the only difference in the two bids is O’Mara’s quote did not list how much of the existing asphalt would be ground up and how thick the asphalt would be that the North Vernon company planned to put back.

“The other one (All-Star’s quote) was for an inch and a half,” he said. “I looked it up and an inch and a half to two inches is common. And then they overlay it.”

Reynolds said asphalt is expected to go up by 40% on July 1, but the contractor has said the price could be set if a decision was made before that time.

Street Superintendent Shawn Ross agreed with Reynolds about motorists complaining about the condition of Bridge Street.

“I had four complaints today,” he said.

Ross said he has tried to keep the holes filled, but there’s not much he can do, especially when it rains and then washes out more.

He also said both companies submitted bids to repave just the 300 feet of Bridge Street in front of the new street department building, just west of the entrance of the park.

The council voted 4-0 to accept All-Star’s quote.
