Oliver Kardos played the No. 1 position for the Seymour boys golf team this spring, and he concluded his season Thursday at the regional at Champions Pointe in Henryville.

It didn’t come as any great surprise when he was named Seymour’s most valuable player during a program held Wednesday night at Shadowood Golf Course.

“I can’t say enough about Oliver,” Owls coach Jim Hoffman said. “He had a great round at the sectional, shooting 73. To qualify for the regional is a great accomplishment.”

Kardos, a foreign exchange student, averaged 42.2 strokes for nine holes and 85 for 18. He shot 85 at regional.

The only senior on the roster was Andon Self, and he received the varsity most improved award.

“He had a solid season and did a great job,” Hoffman said.

Self had averages of 39 and 85.

Ty Stuckwisch received the varsity sportsmanship award. He averaged 39 and 83. Hoffman said he played at an even keel and “he was great for the team.”

For other varsity lettermen, Manny Fontanez averaged 39 and 79, Noah Surface averaged 43 and 87 and Trevor Alberring averaged 45 for nine holes.

The Owls placed fifth in the Hoosier Hills Conference Tournament at Otis Park in Bedford on May 21 when they shot a 361. The Owls defeated the Stars 162-164 at home on May 24. That was their low nine-hole score of the season.

Hoffman said the Owls shot their best 18-hole score (332) June 2 against Bloomington North at Chariot Run in Laconia.

The Owls placed fourth in the Bloomington Sectional and missed qualifying for the regional by one spot.

Hoffman also introduced members of the junior varsity team and presented two special awards. Braden Hinton was named the most improved JV golfer, and Jay Herbert received the JV sportsmanship award.

Hoffman said, “We had a great group of 13 kids. We had teams calling us wanting to play with our kids.”

Hoffman encouraged the returning golfers to play as much golf as they can this summer.

“I’d like to see everybody out here all summer long,” he said. “Most of the work is done before you get to us (coaches).”
