Seymour High School names senior class scholars

Sixteen members of the Seymour High School Class of 2022 have qualified for the Seymour Community Schools Scholar Award.

In announcing the scholars, Principal Greg Prange said he is very proud of this year’s scholars.

“Not only are they very strong students in the classroom, they are true leaders,” Prange said. “Among them are outstanding competitors, musicians, volunteers and team players.”

He said they have great potential for becoming significant leaders in society, and he is confident they will make a positive impact wherever they work and live.

The students and their parents will be recognized at the graduation ceremony at 2:30 p.m. June 5 in the Lloyd E. “Barney” Scott Gymnasium.

The award was initiated in 2000 as part of the school’s effort to encourage students to pursue strong academic programs in preparation for college.

The Class of 2022 is the 19th class eligible to receive the award.

To qualify, students must complete a minimum of 54 credits and satisfy all of the requirements of the Indiana Academic Honors Diploma.

In addition, scholars must earn a minimum of 36 credits in English, mathematics, science, foreign language and social studies, have a weighted grade point average of 4.90 for the 54 credits and earn a minimum of 11 credits in Advanced Placement courses with no grade lower than a B.

This year’s scholars are:

Eliana Baker

The daughter of Jamie and Michael Baker of Cortland, she is a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church Borchers. She has been a four-year member of the cross-country team, where she served as captain during her senior year. She has been a member of varsity chorale since her sophomore year and has served as an assistant section leader and senior section leader. She is a National Honor Society member and has been involved in 4-H for 13 years and Key Club for four years. She plans to attend Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and study chemical engineering.

Rolando Baltazar Felipe

The son of Fabiana Felipe Domingo and Gaspar Baltazar Nicolas of Guatemala, he is a member of Iglesia Torre Fuerte. He was a member of the wrestling team for three years and was named most valuable wrestler his junior and senior years. He was named wrestling academic all-state first team his junior and senior years. He participated in cross-country for two years and unified track and field for one year. He has been in the school band for four years and has served as a DARE Role Model. He plans to attend Indiana University.

Katie Deppen

The daughter of Shawn and Lisa Deppen, she is a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church. Deppen is a member of National Honor Society and achieved high honor roll each year of high school. She is an All-American cheerleader, a four-year member of Seymour varsity cheerleading and a one-year varsity track and field member. A four-year band member, Deppen has served as trumpet section leader and drum major. She also is a 10-year 4-H member and active in Key Club, Riley Dance Marathon and Fellowship of Christian Students the last four years. She’s a DARE Role Model and three-year student government member. She plans on attending Indiana University to study nursing.

Samantha Foster

The daughter of Judd and Sophi Foster, she is a member of Emmanuel Church and served as a youth leader for four years. Foster is a member of National Honor Society, achieving high honor roll all four years of high school. She has served as vice president and president of the school’s Best Buddies program. She is a four-year student government member and participates in Riley Dance Marathon and unified track and field, serving as team captain both junior and senior years. Foster also is a member of the SHS Pep Club, volunteers as a youth adviser for The Arc of Jackson County board and referees for Enter His Courts. She plans to attend Purdue University to study speech, language and hearing sciences.

Hayley Harpe

The daughter of Brandon and Natalie Harpe of Seymour, she is a member of Emmanuel Church. She is a four-year varsity letter winner in volleyball, track and field and cross-country. Harpe was nominated team captain for track and cross-country and was a regional and semistate qualifier, respectively. She is a four-year member of student government, Riley Dance Marathon and Fellowship of Christian Students. She also served as a DARE Role Model, Best Buddies peer and Pep Club member. She is a National Honor Society member with high honor roll the last four years and received the Rising Stars of Indiana recognition her junior year. She plans to attend Indiana University to study biochemistry.

Millicent Hays

The daughter of Erin and Jane Hays of Seymour, she is a four-year member of the Seymour Owl Theater Company, serving as student director this year. Hays also is a four-year member of the SHS choir, serving as section leader both junior and senior years. She is a member of National Honor Society and received high honor roll recognition all four years of high school. She had shared her love of animals through volunteer work at Mercy Animal Rescue for the last six years. She plans to attend Xavier University to study biomedical sciences and minor in theater.

Samantha Jacobi

The daughter of Bridey and Mark Jacobi of Seymour, she is a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church. She also is a member of National Honor Society and student government and has made the high honor roll all four years of high school. She is a four-year member of the cross-country, track and field and swimming teams and marching band. She plans to attend Purdue University and study kinesiology.

Dylan Nguyen

The son of Thong and Tramy Nguyen, he is a four-year member of the marching band, where he has earned the ISSMA gold medal in 2020 and 2022. He is a two-year member of Key Club and has made the high honor roll every year of high school. He plans to attend Purdue University and study computer science.

Hiley Obermeyer

The daughter of Darin and Tammy Obermeyer, she has played tennis and been a four-year band member, participated in Riley Dance Marathon and was named a DARE Role Model. She also is a member of National Honor Society and has earned high honor roll during her four years of high school. She has been an active member of 4-H and Junior Leaders and was named Outstanding 4-H Junior Leader as well as serving as president, vice president and secretary of both groups. She attends Hayden United Methodist Church. She plans to attend Auburn University and study prepharmacy and nutrition.

John Polbito

The son of Junior and Javelyn Polbito, he has earned high honor roll recognition for four years and was named a Rising Star of Indiana. In addition, he earned the certificate of multilingual proficiency during his senior year. He has been a four-year band member, participated in Key Club and the track and field team and was named a DARE Role Model. He plans to study finance at Indiana University.

Michael Conrad Proffer

The son of Dave and Glenda Proffer, he has been a member of band, National Honor Society, 4-H and Boy Scouts of America. He also has been a four-year letter winner in cross-country and track and field, earning academic all-state awards in both sports. He has been admitted to the Purdue University Honors College and plans to study biochemistry.

Valeria Ramirez Herrera

The daughter of Nadia Herrera Luna and Roman Ramirez Lopez, she has served as president of student government and National Honor Society. She is a four-year member of band and volleyball, where she held various leadership positions, such as section leader and team captain. She also earned academic all-state honors in volleyball and tennis. She also has been involved with 4-H and Junior Leaders, where she has served as both president and treasurer as well as earning the I Dare You Award. She has served as president of Riley Dance Marathon and is active at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, where she has been a youth group leader for two years. She plans to attend Loyola University Chicago and study health administration.

Casey Regruth

The son of Jennifer and John Regruth, he has earned high honor roll honors all four years of high school. In addition, he has earned several athletic awards, including most valuable player in basketball and all-district and all-conference first team in soccer. He also served as captain of the soccer and basketball teams and was a staff writer and editor of the school newspaper and a guest writer for The Tribune. He also hosted the SHS radio show on 96.3 WJAA. He attends St. Ambrose Catholic Church, where he has served as a group leader. He plans to study data science at Purdue University.

Alexis Turner

The daughter of Brent and Amber Turner of Vallonia, she is a member of National Honor Society and has made the high honor roll every year in high school. She is a DARE Role Model and a peer tutor and involved in Biology Club and Pep Club. She was awarded Owl of the Month for her outstanding performance in health class (2019) and agriculture (2020). She also was a one-year member of choir and participated on the archery team. She was awarded the Indiana Scholars Scholarship and the Provost scholarship through Indiana University, where she plans to study wildlife biology.

Kaylee Waskom

The daughter of David and Stacey Waskom, she is a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church. She is a National Merit finalist, scoring amongst the top students in the United States on the PSAT/NMSQT during her junior year. She was awarded an AP Scholar Award for her performance on AP exams and the Small Town and Rural National Recognition Scholarship via Collegeboard. She also was a four-year team member of the girls basketball team, earning most improved (2020), ICGSA academic all-state (2022), IBCA academic all-state honorable mention (2022) and a varsity letter (2021, 2022). She has been a two-year varsity athlete on the softball team, earning the coach’s award (2021). She was chosen as this year’s Indiana Association of School Principals Regional Academic All-Star. She is a member of National Honor Society, Riley Dance Marathon committee, Latin Club, 4-H and Mayor’s Youth Council. She also was a junior volunteer at Schneck Medical Center and assisted with the unified track and field team. She plans to attend the University of Alabama and study international studies on a pre-law track.

Eli Wood

The son of the Rev. Stephen and Michelle Wood of Seymour, he is a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church Borchers. He has been active in his church youth group for four years and has assisted in managing the technology needs during church service. He has participated in three mission trips through his church. He has achieved the high honor roll all four years of high school. He is a member of National Honor Society and student government. He also was a member of the archery team for four years and earned the NASP Archery Scholarship (2022). He participated in Academic Super Bowl for two years in a row, serving on the math team, and also is a member of the robotics team, serving as captain. The recipient of the Cortland Alumni Scholarship (2022), he plans to attend Purdue University and study computer science.
