Owls beat the Braves by three strokes

Seymour and Brownstown Central golfers were unable to take advantage of the warm, sunny weather Friday afternoon at the Shadowood Golf Course in Seymour.

The Owls won 178-181 but Seymour Coach Jim Hoffman said, “It’s golf. It’s difficult, but we’ve really got to think through things. We shot 13 strokes better, when it was 50 degrees and 20-mile an hour wind (on April 2) than we did tonight.

“We get down on ourselves. We let it carry over to the next shot or the next hole and it’s really affecting the scores. We’re better than that.”

Seymour’s Ty Stuckwisch was medalist for the meet with a 41.

He said this is his best score on the front nine at Shadowood.

“I had a couple putts that I should have made but it was a solid round,” Stuckwisch said. “My driver was great today. My irons could have been better but I can’t complain. I drained a 20-footer for a birdie on two. That felt good.

“The goal this season is to break 40. I’m right there. I need to stay away from the big numbers. I like the front nine better by far. The back nine is tough. The greens are harder.”

Hoffman said Stuckwisch had a great night.

“He played really well,” he said. “He had a bad hole a couple holes in and then he brought it back and he was the medalist tonight. I’m proud of him, and Oliver (Kardos) is getting there. He’s just got some growing to get through and he’s still going to be there.”

Next for the Owls was Kardos with a 43, followed by Manny Fontanez with 46, Trevor Alberring with 48 and Andon Self with 49.

Chandler Stahl and Matthew Reedy were low for the Braves with rounds of 43.

“I did pretty well on putting,” Stahl said. “My chipping wasn’t the best. My drives were all right. I had some go left instead of right. I like the front nine way better than the back nine. I need to work on my approach shots, my chipping.”

Braves Coach Brent Hattabaugh said, “It’s a little higher than what we’ve been. Our short game came down to chipping around the green. We chipped them long. We had too many three-putts today.

“Stahl and Reedy played well seven out of the nine holes. Each one of them had a couple bad holes that cost them.

“We’re going to keep working on our short game. We’ve been trying to work on it. The weather is starting to get better so we’ll get more time on the course so we can get more practice on our short game.”

Next for the Braves was Elix Preston with a 46, Caiden Gwin shot 47, and Connor Gwin and Jaren Cunningham each with 48s.

Hoffman said, “We shot 350 last week. We should be trending down and I think we will. Everybody had a bad hole here and there, and that’s part of it. The disappointing part of it is its great weather compared to what we’ve had and we come back and shoot a score that I think was 13 strokes higher than what we should.”

Other Seymour scores: Noah Surface 50, Trevor Goecker 59, Ethan Alberring 62, Jay Herbert 68, Zach Kriete 71, Kohnyr Warner 71.

Other Brownstown scores: Smith Hackman 49, Caden Waskom 49, Carson Darlage 49, Colton Hallow 52, Cole Brelage 54.
