Mrs. Vera F. Polk Brittingham, age 103, of Seymour, Indiana formerly of Madison entered this life on May 26, 1918 in Fort Branch, Indiana. She was the loving daughter of the late Robert K. and Hattie Fisher Polk. She was raised in Fort Branch and was a 1936 graduate of Fort Branch High School. She married Robert Dale Brittingham on June 30, 1940 in Fort Branch, Indiana and they settled in Madison in 1946. This happy union of 73 years was blessed with a son, Alan Lee. She was a homemaker her whole life, and enjoyed raising her son and caring for her grandchildren. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in downtown Madison. Vera also was a member of the Home Economics Club and the Boating Club. She spent many weekends at Cooper’s Bottom, and enjoyed gardening, playing bridge, playing euchre, bingo, and sewing. Vera and Bob loved to bowl and they played on a couple’s league at Ritter’s Lanes in Madison. At age 89 Vera was having so much trouble with her eye sight she went to see her eye doctor and found she had macular degeneration. This was a great disappointment to Vera because she loved to read, but Vera’s son came to the rescue. He had found a machine called Merlin and she was blessed to be able to read again with this invention. After moving to Seymour to be near her son, she loved to walk, read her devotions, attending the activities at the care center was a great joy to her, everyone enjoyed her great sense of humor and she always kept a smile on her face. She stated on her 103rd birthday that “It’s just another day,” she said, smiling. “I’ve done just what I wanted to do.” Vera died on Wednesday, March 23, 2022, at 11:40 p.m. at the Covered Bridge Health Campus in Seymour, Indiana.
