Brownstown Students of the Month recognized

BROWNSTOWN — Three girls have been recognized by their teachers as Brownstown Central Community School Corp. Students of the Month for January.

Fourth-grader Bella Brown, sixth-grader Makensie Grider and freshman Hailey Bowman were honored during Thursday night’s board of school trustees meeting at the administration office.

Brown was selected Little Brave of the Month for respect by her teacher, Susie Alstatt, Brownstown Elementary School Principal Chrystal Street said.

“The definition of respect is a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their qualities or achievements. Bella Brown is an excellent example of this definition,” Street said in sharing Alstatt’s comments.

Alstatt said she admires Brown’s positive attitude that she brings to class every day.

“She’s helpful to all, considerate of others and never has an unkind word to say about anyone,” Alstatt wrote. “Bella’s work ethic is strong. She is dependable and honest. You can’t help but respect a person with these qualities, especially one so young. I’m thankful to have Bella as a student in my classroom.”

Street said Bella is a sweetheart.

“I’m glad Miss Bella was chosen this time,” she said.

Brownstown Central High School Principal Joe Sheffer said teacher Sharon DeHart selected Bowman because of her exceptional work ethic that enables her to be successful in the classroom.

“She takes the initiative to get assignments completed accurately and on time,” DeHart wrote. “Her thirst for knowledge and commitment to education does not go unnoticed. She doesn’t just want to get her assignments finished. She wants to understand what she is doing. She is very respectful and always willing to help others.”

DeHart said she is proud of Bowman and wishes her the best in the years to come at Brownstown.

Brownstown Central Middle School Principal Doug McClure discussed Grider’s nomination as Student of the Month by the school’s sixth grade teachers.

“Makensie is a vibrant student in and out of the classroom,” McClure said in reading the teachers’ nomination. “She’s always respectful among her teachers and classmates, and it is this consideration and honesty that set her apart. She continues to improve her academic excellence by always turning in quality work on time and being on level after every review period. Makensie can always be counted on to have a positive attitude. In fact, her unique style and sweet demeanor are clear to see.”

The sixth grade teachers also said they appreciate Grider’s ability, diligence and joyful presence in the classroom.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Students of the Month and their parents have not been able to attend board meetings to receive their awards.

That’s a situation Trustee Clayton Beard said he would like to see changed in the coming months through discussions with staff, administrators, students and parents as the conditions surrounding the pandemic change.

“I would like to see our Students of the Month come back to our meetings,” he said. “I enjoy that.”

He said while it may not seem like much, those kids work hard.
