Reed May said when he became head football coach at Brownstown Central High School 29 years ago he wanted to make Friday nights a community night.

May has compiled a coaching record of 285-57, won 13 sectionals, had 29 consecutive winning seasons, and this fall coached the Braves to their 20th Mid-Southern Conference title and reached the three goals he and the team set: a winning record (11-1), beat Seymour in the Jackson Bowl and win the conference.

The players that accomplished those goals were honored in the BCHS auditorium Tuesday night.

Kiernan Tiemeyer was named the Braves most valuable player.

“He was our leading rusher, receiver, best defensive back and our return man,” May said. “Plus he had to play quarterback against North Harrison.”

He tied a career school record with two kickoff returns for touchdowns.

Brayden Millick received the mental attitude award.

“He was a leader on the offensive line, was dedicated in the off-season and during the season,” May said of Millick. “He had a great attitude and led through example and work ethic.”

Kahne Bell received the Mason Watson Award.

May said, “Mason Watson Award is a special award in honor of Mason. It goes to a deserving senior picked by the coaches. This year was special because Kahne Bell’s mom is Mason Watson’s sister. Kahne had a tremendous season and he had close ties to Mason.”

Carson Darlage was named the most outstanding offensive back, and Dustyn Kocsis was named the most outstanding offensive lineman.

Eli Wischmeier was named the most outstanding defensive lineman/inside linebacker, Jake Pauley got the nod for the most outstanding defensive back/outside linebacker, and Cooper Wolka was named the outstanding special teams player.

Wischmeier topped the Braves in defensive points with 93.

Caleb Cummings was named the outstanding scout team player.

Bell, Darlage, Kocsis, Pauley, Tiemeyer and Wischmeier were named all-MSC first team, and Creed Gambrel, Millick and Brandon Reynolds were named honorable mention.

Tiemeyer and Wischmeier made the coaches association Class 3A senior all-state team and Darlage made the Class 3A all-state junior team.

May also announced that Nick Goecker, Thad Goecker, Millick, Pauley, Wyatt Steward, Tiemeyer, Wischmeier and Wolka were named to the academic all-state team. May said players had to be seniors, carry a GPA of 3.4 or higher, and play in 70 percent of the quarters to be eligible for academic all-state.

Assistant coach Cam Cockerham introduced the junior varsity players. He said that team went 5-1, and he announced Lane Zike as the most improved JV back and Andrew George as the most improved JV lineman.

There were 16 seniors on the roster and May said, “All 16 seniors started some time during the season, and they all contributed to our success. They grew up a lot and hopefully created memories that will last a lifetime. These seniors were 37-7 over four years.”

The seniors presented May with a table for his office at Blevins Stadium.

May said the team came together later than he had hoped they would as they did not jell during the summer.

“We knew how good this team could be, but at the end of summer we didn’t look that good, but we stuck together,” May said. “We had nine juniors, 13 sophomores and 10 freshmen. We need more numbers. We need to get bigger, faster, stronger. You can make yourself an athlete in the weight room. Our motto for 2022 is ‘team first.’”

May said he expects that Brownstown Central will be Class 2A next fall.

He said fundraisers are an important part of high school football because of the costs. He said a new helmet is $300, and it will cost the school $4,500 to get their helmets reconditioned before the 2022 season.

May announced that assistant coach Shane Fallis is retiring.

Cheer coach Brooklyn Thomas introduced the cheerleaders and announced Chesney Johnson as the mental attitude winner.

May also introduced the managers and said Emily Reinbold received her letter jacket.

Players Jonathon Garvey, Bryce Neal, Adam Wayt and Ryan Branaman, and cheerleaders Lydia Chandler, Jenna Bracamonte, Kemora Chastain and Allie Schocke also received their jackets.
