Seymour’s Regruth headlines boys soccer All-County team

The first year Seymour’s Casey Regruth played varsity, which was his sophomore season, the Owls finished the year with just three wins.

Things didn’t get easier from there. The schedule was beefed up by head coach Matt Dennis, but by the time Regruth was a senior this past fall, Seymour exceeded expectations and finished the season 9-5-2. The Owls finished third place in the Hoosier Hills Conference behind Floyd Central and Columbus East.

Regruth has been a constant along the backline of Seymour’s defense for the past three seasons, and for his efforts put forth this year, he has been named The Tribune’s Jackson County Boys Soccer Player of the Year.

“It was a really great season,” Regruth said. “We had a group of guys my age that had been playing with each other for a really long time. We had a lot of great guys on our team, and we all came together this year, and we really put together a really solid year. I was really pleased with how this season went.”

Seymour drew a talented Floyd Central team in the sectional, and the Owls led 1-0 at halftime. Two goals from the Highlanders in the second half ended Seymour’s season, but the Owls looked anything but out-matched during that contest.

“We played really, really well,” Regruth said of that game. “There were a couple mistakes that happened. We played hard, and that’s all you can ask for. I was really proud of our effort on that night.”

As someone who plays on defense, it’s Regruth’s job to be as vocal as he can.

His ability to see everything take shape in front of him allows him to be a leader on the field for the Owls. Seymour prided itself on defense heading into the season, and Regruth’s experience was a big part of that.

“It’s really important for me to be very vocal because I can see everything. I can see the whole game because I’m in the back,” he said. “I always tried to be vocal. Coach Dennis always made that a point. He always wanted me to be as vocal as possible, so I can help out my team the best I could. So, yeah, that was a major point of focus for me throughout the season.”

Regruth earned Seymour’s defender of the year award at their team banquet. He also earned HHC all-conference first team, academic all-state and first team all-district.

For his all-district honor, Regruth got to compete on the all-district team for two games against the Indianapolis district and the Fort Wayne district a couple weeks ago.

“It was great,” he said of the experience. “A lot of the guys I was on the team with from surrounding areas I played against. A lot of great players on the team. I loved just being able to go up there and have fun. Kind of a pressure-free weekend just to play the sport that I love. I had a really great time it was awesome.”
