SEYMOUR

Berna Jones of Seymour, Indiana passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on November 14, 2021 at Baptist Hospital Floyd in New Albany, Indiana after more than a year of complications due to COVID-19. She was born to the late Burnam and Dorothy Turner in 1956 in Jeffersonville, Indiana. She graduated from Tippecanoe High School in Tipp City, Ohio a year early in 1973 and married her husband Danny Jones in 1975 in Austin, Indiana.

While working and raising her family, Berna enrolled in courses and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education from Indiana University Southeast in 1999. As a teacher, Berna taught for over 20 years before retiring in 2020 to care for her mother. In line with her strong faith, she believed in promoting acceptance and compassion for others and strived to educate her students on these qualities with lessons on Black history, the Holocaust, the plight of Native Americans, and animal testing.

Berna was an advocate to stop elder abuse, a champion for public education, and cared about the prevention of sudden infant death as well as supporting families affected by SIDS. She enjoyed spending time with family and dear friends, relaxing at the beach after combing for seashells, tending to her myriad of flowers and plants, and stirring up just a little bit of good trouble. Berna was the rock for her husband and girls. Her daughters were her top priority, and she supported them fiercely.

Berna is survived by her spouse, Danny Jones; daughters, Jamie Jones, Amy Jones, Sarah Jones, and Dee Cheng; niece, Rachael Turner; and many cousins, uncles, nieces, nephews, chosen family, and friends. She was preceded in death by her brother, Stephen Turner; daughter, Amanda Jones; grandmother Retta Smith; and parents, Burnam and Dorothy Turner.

Visitation for Berna will be held on Friday, November 19, from 4:00-8:00pm at Voss &Sons Funeral Service. The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, November 20 at 1:00pm with Pastor Matt Price. Family and friends may call from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service.

Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery in Seymour, Indiana. Family asks that memorials be made to the National Association to STOP Guardianship Abuse (NASGA), American SIDS Institute, The Al Katz Center, or a charity of one’s choice through the funeral home.
