Local volleyball players earn all-academic, conference honors

A record was broken this season in Indiana high school volleyball.

Across the Hoosier State, 868 student-athletes earned the right to be called academic all-state, crushing last year’s mark of 732.

Every senior for Seymour, Brownstown Central and Trinity Lutheran all earned academic all-state this season.

For the Owls, it was Kierstyn Ellis, Paige Lawrence and Valeria Ramirez.

The Cougars had a trio, as well, in Kamzi Gross, Ruthie Bingham and Stella Kleffman.

And last but not least, the Braves had five seniors earn the award in Emily Singleton, Erin Singleton, Kelsey Wischmeier, Reagan Nuss and Zori Otting. Manager Chloe Covert earned the honor, too.

In other local volleyball news, the Southern Athletic Conference released its 2021 all-conference team earlier this week, and Crothersville’s Kennadi Lakins was one of 11 players to make the team.

Lakins is the 63rd volleyball player in Crothersville history to earn all-SAC dating back to 1975. She is the first Tiger to earn this honor since Maddie Riley and Makayla Helt did it in 2018.

Joining Lakins on the all-SAC team this season are Linzie Wernert (Lanesville), Kylie Lacy (Henryville), Ella Perkinson (Borden), Macy Fieds (New Washington), Adyson Cain (New Washington), Devyn Oberholtzer (Lanesville), Karolynn Phillips (Lanesville), Emma Stacy (Lanesville), Grace Ellison (New Washington) and Parker Thomasson (South Central).

The volleyball seasons for Crothersville and Seymour both ended in sectional last week, but Brownstown and Trinity are still alive in the postseason tournament.

The Cougars will be taking on Loogootee this Saturday at Loogootee around noon, and Brownstown will be taking on Brebeuf Jesuit at the same time in Danville. Both matches are regional semifinals with the regional title match taking place later at 7 p.m.
