The latest buzzings

Greetings and salutations.

My head subject, the lady who wears the white suit, has placed me in charge of writing this week’s column. She told me it would be all the buzz.

You see, someone like myself who is absolute royalty has a lot to say since our kingdom was recently relocated.

A few days ago, I was tending to my business of ruling my hive with all of my female minions tucked upon a tree branch somewhere in the downtown Seymour area. My loyal workers were tending to my children, making food for us, cleaning, etc. when suddenly, everyone began to retreat. Cool smoke began to gently permeate the crevices of the honeycomb, and I along with everyone else ran for cover.

Before too long, we were removed from our penthouse abode in the crook of a crabapple tree and tucked gently into a wooden box that smelled wonderfully of lemongrass oil and pine. It was dark, warm and safe.

My workers protested a bit as I began to set up shop that first evening, several of them retreating back to the spot where the hive used to be in the tree, but it didn’t take them long to realize there was delicious food in the form of a pollen patty that had been placed between the comb and that all of their sisters (both hatched and unhatched) were in the dark box.

I am quite influential, and it didn’t take more than 24 hours before everyone was accounted for and we returned to our usual business of collecting pollen, raising young and general upkeep of the hive.

Then a short time later, I received word that the front of the box had been sealed, and I felt the entire comb move. We huddled together as we awaited what would happen next.

There were some bumps and some shaking, but very soon, the activity settled down and then all was quiet. The front entrance of the hive was opened again, and I received a message that where we had been relocated was a honeybee’s dream: Lots of wildflowers and forage as far as a bee could fly.

Winter is just around the corner, and I know we’ve got to work very hard to build as much honey as we can before that time. I’m not sure what we did to deserve such a wonderful spot, but I think as long as the lady in the white suit comes around every now and again and doesn’t upset us too much, we should survive the bitter cold without much problem.

Until next time…
