Annual festival offering pumpkin carving contest

The Fort Vallonia Days pumpkin carving contest will have divisions of ages 6 to 11, 12 to 17 and 18 and older.

Categories are prettiest, scariest, most creative and Fort Vallonia Days theme.

All pumpkins will be judged on design, detail, creativity and originality. Pumpkins must be real and may be carved, painted or decorated, and one entry will be allowed per contestant. Stencils are allowed, and parents can help; however, pumpkins should reflect the age and abilities of the child.

Deliver your completed pumpkin and a completed official entry form to Vallonia Christian Church, 2344 S. Main St., between 4 and 6 p.m. Oct. 15. Any entries checked in after 6 p.m. will not be judged. Entry forms are available online at facebook.com/fortvallonia.

Judging will take place at 6 p.m. Oct. 15, and winners will be announced at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 16 at the festival’s main stage.

A first prize will be awarded for each division and category, and winners should be present to collect their prize. A Best in Show grand prize winner will be selected from the winners of the age and category contests and receive $75, sponsored by Hackman Family Farm Market, Stuckwish Farm Market and Tiemeyer’s Farm Market.

Each participant will receive a Fort Vallonia Days wooden nickel, and all pumpkins will be displayed during the festival, which is Oct. 16 and 17.

All pumpkins must be removed by 5 p.m. Oct. 17. Any remaining after that time will be thrown away.
