FRANKFORT, Ind. — Three people died in a car crash in central Indiana on Friday night.

The Clinton County Sheriff’s Office said the crash involved three cars and ended with one of the vehicles on fire, killing two people inside it.

Authorities said in a statement that the driver of a Subaru crossed the center line of US Route 421, hitting an SUV. The SUV’s driver tried to avoid the Subaru but his vehicle rolled over.

The original Subaru continued to cross the center line and hit a third vehicle head on. That car, a Chevrolet Trailblazer, caught fire after the crash.

The driver of the Subaru, Amanda Armstrong, and the two people inside the Trailblazer, 69-year-old Jackie Burgin and 66-year-old Shirley Burgin, all died at the crash scene.

A dog found inside Jackie Burgin’s vehicle survived and was taken to the Humane Society of Clinton County.

The sheriff’s statement said investigators believe alcohol was a factor. Sheriff Rich Kelly called it a “tragic and preventable scene.”

“Words simply fail to describe the heartbreak caused by the actions that took place here tonight,” Kelly said.
