Medora honors fall, winter athletes at sports banquet

Volleyball and basketball awards were presented during Medora’s honors day program held in the school gymnasium Thursday morning.

Medora Athletic Director Kara Hunt announced the varsity and junior varsity volleyball and the varsity and junior varsity basketball awards.

Abby Johnson received the mental attitude award for volleyball and Eli Sturgill received that honor in basketball.

Kayla Newby, Braxton McCory and Savanna Wineinger received student athlete awards for having grade point averages of 3.5 or higher.

Jenna Bowers was named to the Southern Roads Conference all-conference volleyball team, and received the hitting and most improved awards.

Newby received the outstanding server award and an academic award, Mariah Cobb received the serve reception award, and Jarey Babcock received the setting plaque.

Zoey Ray was named the most improved junior varsity player, Laykin Hinderlider was named the outstanding server, Maria Cobb received the serve reception award and Kaitlyn Cobb received the hitting award for the junior varsity.

Missy Stewart, head volleyball coach, announced her recognition earlier in the school year and Leah Young will be head volleyball coach this fall.

Shepard Earl received the rebounding and field goal percentage awards for the basketball team, while McCory received the free throw and 3-point awards. Both players were named all SRC honorable mention.

David Persinger, the only senior on the team last winter, received the assists award and Bowers was named the most improved player.

The school did not have a girls’ team last season so girls were permitted to play with the boys.

Bowers also received the junior varsity assists award, Zach Cobb was named the most improved JV player, Kacie Inscoe received the rebounding trophy, Mariah Cobb received the free throw award, and Aaralyn Hackney received the field goal percentage award.

Mark Morin was varsity basketball coach and Bobby Thompson was junior varsity basketball coach last winter.

McCory has been a one-man golf team at Medora this spring, and Hunt announced he received the most outstanding player award.

She said he hopes Medora can have a full golf team next spring.

Middle school basketball awards were also presented.
