The 2021 National Archery in the Schools Program national tournament was unlike any other.

The western and eastern tournaments were switched to virtual competitions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and a 3D challenge was added.

Both competitions were open to students to shoot and upload their scores from April 18 through May 8. Coaches provided neutral scorers at their local shooting location, and the results were submitted electronically using the NASP tournament platform nasptournaments.org.

Despite the changes, a record 15,863 archers from 1,053 schools in 42 states participated in the virtual bullseye competition. Plus, the 3D challenge had 4,015 archers from 326 schools in 33 states.

Seymour High School was among the virtual bullseye competitors.

On May 1 in the school’s auxiliary gymnasium, the Owls combined the virtual national tournament with senior night, and they picked a great time to shoot their season-best score, 3,347.

That placed Seymour 35th out of 247 in the high school division, which coach Jill Purkhiser said is exciting.

Checking the rankings among Indiana teams competing, Seymour came in second behind Castle, which placed 15th overall with 3,398. At the state tournament March 13, Castle won with 3,349, which was only 14 points ahead of fifth-place Seymour.

In the national tournament, Seymour was led by seniors Hannah Busby and Evan Kegeris, who both shot 284 out of 300. They were followed by seniors Ethan McKinney (283), Kaylee Tudor (282), Logan Bryant (281), Madelynn Burns (281) and Johnathan Engleking (280).

Seymour also had a second team competing in nationals, and it placed 190th with a score of 3,074.

Again, seniors led the way. Matthew Garcia shot 270, followed by Sierra Fletcher (268) and Seth Lane (266). Sophomore Emily Robson also shot 266.

The season will wrap up with the Open Championship on June 11 at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Purkhiser said Seymour’s team includes 22 archers, and they will shoot at 11 a.m.
