Jackson County United Way recently opened registration for the eighth annual Rock’n Ready free school supplies program.

The program provides free basic school supplies for students who will be in kindergarten through 12th grade this fall at a Jackson County school.

“We’re happy to be able to continue this program again this year,” Engagement Director Emily Engelking said. “While there are some things we are still working on to make sure it’s a safe event, we do know that we are committed to getting the supplies into the hands of the kids who need them.”

Engelking is overseeing the program after the departure of Program Manager Bonita Dobbs earlier this year. This is Engelking’s second year working with Rock’n Ready.

“I’m excited to be able to take the lead on the program with the support of a great staff and committee of people who are dedicated to the event,” she said. “Everyone brings their own ideas, and their passion and enthusiasm make the job much easier.”

Every student receives a backpack as well as the supplies. Supplies given out vary by grade but typically include pencils, notebooks, crayons, colored pencils, dry erase markers and various other items. A full list can be found on the JCUW website, jacsy.org. Without registration, supplies cannot be guaranteed.

Last year, the Rock’n Ready program served more than 1,100 students across the county. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was turned into a drive-thru for students in Brownstown, while students in Seymour, Medora and Crothersville picked up their backpacks on the first day of school.

United Way is still monitoring the situation for distribution this year and is working with the Jackson County Health Department to make the best call at each school.

“We want to make sure everyone, from students and their families to our staff and volunteers, is safe,” Executive Director Maci Baurle said. “All precautions are being considered, and we hope to come to a decision about distribution by the beginning of June.”

To register, parents can go online at jacsy.org/schoolsupplies (English) or jacsy.org/espschoolsupplies (Spanish). You can also call Engelking to register at 812-522-5450, ext. 5.

Registration will close July 2.
