Letter: Columnist promoting division

To the editor:

Dr. Richard Moss,

I read your article dated April 29, 2021, in The Tribune and was shocked and surprised that a well-educated man would promote half-truths and false accusations.

Since the Civil War, we as a nation have attempted to make voting more available to all citizens.

Personally, I think it is a national shame that we do not have 90% or more of our eligible voters vote in each and every election. Seems to me that is how a democracy is supposed to work.

It is difficult for me to understand why you and your conservative friends advocate suppressing the vote. Other than advocating that only conservatives should have the right to vote.

I have no issue with requiring the voter identify themselves by matching signatures, etc. Proof of eligibility to vote is determined at the time of registration.

I would recommend that you read the recent unbiased news reports, study all of the last election investigations and look at the results of the court cases involved in alleged illegal voting. You will find that there was only an extreme minimal number of illegal votes cast. I might add that the illegal votes were cast by both conservative and liberal voters.

In a democracy, the people are entitled to boycott any business or sport organization that they desire. Likewise, a corporation/business has the right to decide what is the best action for their business.

It just so happens that the state of Georgia made the decision to take action (voter restrictions) that has upset many people, large important companies and sport groups. Is there anything wrong with people and/or companies making their own decisions?

Your total article is a tirade against citizens who believe in progressive government. I am not an extreme liberal, but I do firmly believe that if our country is to continue to make progress, develop good jobs and to be considered a leader in the world, we must spend big money on improving/upgrading our infrastructure (of all kinds). Our current infrastructure is judged to be 13 in the world.

It seems that you are most interested in total conservative control of our government. You certainly have a right to your opinion, and likewise, I have a right to mine; however, I object to you being able to spout your half-truths and conservative party dominance in a two-thirds page article in our local newspaper. I have no problem with you or anybody providing articles to the newspaper that provide food for thought and discussion. I think that is great. However, when half-truths or lies are promoted as fact, I do object.

I strongly object to articles promoting division. The country is now severely divided. Why would you write articles that promote more division?

Frank Cummings, Seymour
