Brownstown Central standout guard Katherine Benter was named the girls basketball District 3 player of the week for her performance in last week’s sectional play that advanced the Braves to regional.

Benter, a senior who is slated to play for Hanover College next year, received the recognition from the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association and Franciscan Health Sports Medicine after leading her team to three wins and the title in the Class 3A Edgewood Sectional.

The 5-foot-9 team leader scored 31 points in a 62-38 triumph over Owen Valley. She also scored 31 points, most of the Braves’ points, in a 43-32 win over Edgewood. In the championship game, won by Brownstown Central 59-35 over Brown County, Benter scored 14 points with eight rebounds and four assists.

Sweeping those games gave Brownstown a 19-6 record and a second straight sectional championship.

The Braves meet 16-7 Bishop Chatard on Saturday at Greencastle in the first round of regional play at noon.
