Scholarships for seniors who attended Hayden Elementary School

Eligible Jennings County High School seniors who attended Hayden Elementary School for four or more years and be admitted to a college, junior college, technical or trade school.

Applications are being accepted and can be picked up in the high school guidance office. For information about the scholarships, contact the Hayden Historical Museum by calling 812-592-8445 or sending an email to [email protected].

Besides receiving a plaque, each recipient will receive a cash award.

The available scholarships include:

Apphia Wohrer Gerth Memorial Scholarship

This award will be given to a senior who was a member of the Hayden Little Hoosier Historians while they were attending Hayden Elementary School.

This scholarship was established in memory of Apphia Wohrer Gerth, a former schoolteacher and one of the founding directors of the Hayden Historical Museum. She took a great interest in the activities of the Little Hoosier Historians and was one of its biggest supporters. The recipient will receive a $250 cash award.

Pat Sullivan/Rodger Ruddick Honorary Scholarship

Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Bessenger established this scholarship to honor Pat Sullivan and Rodger Ruddick for their continued involvement with the youth of Hayden and the Spencer Township community. The recipient will receive a $500 cash award.

Michael Euler Memorial Scholarship

This award is in memory of Michael Euler, a former Hayden student and the last Spencer Township resident to lose his life while serving his country. The Hayden High School Alumni Association sponsors this scholarship. The recipient will receive a $850 cash award.

Martha M. Vogel Memorial Scholarship

The family and friends of Martha Vogel, a 1997 Jennings County High School graduate who lost her life in an automobile accident in 1998, established this award with the Jennings County Community Foundation. The 2020 recipients each received a $500 cash award.

John and Alice Wohrer Memorial Scholarship

Preference will be given to the applicant who has been admitted to a college or junior college with the intention of gaining a degree in the field of education. This scholarship was established in memory of John and Alice Wohrer, who were great promoters of education in Spencer Township during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Many of the Wohrer descendants from across the country joined together to make this scholarship possible and established the fund with the community foundation. The 2020 winner received a $1,512.36 cash award.

Edward and Marjorie Kehrt Memorial Scholarship

Applicants must be a resident of Spencer Township. The scholarship was established with the community foundation by the Kehrt estate and is in memory of Edward and Marjorie Kehrt. He was an active volunteer in the community, serving on the Spencer Township Fire Department and other local organizations, while she was a longtime cook at Hayden Elementary School. The 2020 winner received a $1,243.87 cash award.
