A Crothersville man was airlifted to a regional hospital Friday night after accidentally shooting himself in the face, police report.

Ryan Smith, 32, was listed in stable condition at University of Louisville Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.

According to a news release from Jackson County Sheriff Rick Meyer, county officers responded to the 400 block of South Kovener Street in Crothersville after receiving a report a man had accidentally shot himself.

Meyer said the man, later identified as Smith, had removed the magazine from his .25-caliber semiautomatic handgun and held it up to his face in an attempt to prove it was not loaded; however, there was still a round in the chamber.

Smith was first treated by Jackson County Emergency Medical Services personnel before he was airlifted.

Jackson County Sheriff’s Department detectives were called to the scene to investigate the incident.

Members of the Crothersville Police Department and Crothersville-Vernon Township Volunteer Fire Department also assisted in the response.
