Eight local entities have come together to begin a daily hot meal site for anyone in need.
Starting Thursday, meals will be served from 5 to 6 p.m. at Waymaker Ministries Inc.’s resource center being constructed at 326 Dupont Drive on the east side of Seymour.
Those wanting to take advantage of this resource are asked to park on the street and line up according to social distancing with one member of the household approaching the service table in order to get food, said Karen Browning, executive director and founder of Waymaker Ministries.
Waymaker is heading up the Feeding Seymour effort in conjunction with Immanuel Lutheran Church, Community Diner of Seymour, Central Christian Church, St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 1252 and The Alley and in cooperation with the city of Seymour.
Navigation team members from Waymaker also will be on hand to assess additional needs such as groceries, utilities, rent, etc. The navigators will be taking information and giving out Jackson County United Way’s COVID-19 Resource Response information. All those needing additional help will be contacted within 48 hours of submitting information with Waymaker’s team.
“We want to stress that this site is not replacing the Monday through Friday meals at The Alley,” Browning said. “This site is designed to help target the east and central areas of town to help meet the growing needs of our community. It is also designed to help with food on the weekend.”
The Alley will still be serving from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 505 Community Drive, Seymour.
Feeding Seymour is a project estimated to run approximately 10 weeks, while The Alley Kitchen is a year-round resource for the community.
Currently, Waymaker does not have a partner for Friday night meals. If you would like to sponsor the cost of the meal and/or volunteer to serve, contact Waymaker’s Feeding Seymour coordinator, John Cord, at [email protected].
To make a tax-deductible donation, send a check payable to Waymaker to P.O. Box 189, Seymour, IN 47274 with Feeding Seymour in the memo.
For every $3 donated, a meal is provided to someone in need.
