BROWNSTOWN

One of three men who fled from the scene of a crash Thursday morning west of Brownstown was captured hours after the incident was reported, police said.

The name of the man was not available at press time, but he was found near county roads 600W and 50N. The other two men remain at large.

Police were called at 10:14 a.m. to the scene of a two-vehicle property damage wreck involving a white van, carrying the men, and a woman in another vehicle at U.S. 50 and North State Road 135. Police continue to investigate exactly how the wreck occurred, according to Lt. Adam Nicholson with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department.

Nicholson said after leaving the van, the men fled south of U.S. 50, but were later seen walking in the 400 block of North County Road 500W before fleeing into a cornfield by a witness.

Sgt. Stephen Wheeles with the Indiana State Police later spotted the three, but the men got away, police said.

Nicholson said one of the men was wearing blue jeans and no shirt, and that police did not have descriptions of the other two men. He said the police found clothing in the area.

A drone was used to search the area where the men initially fled, but by the time they were spotted on the north side the drone’s battery had started to run low, Nicholson said.

Sheriff Rick Meyer, eight county officers and Brownstown Chief Tom Hanner, Assistant Chief Joe Kelly and Officer Adam Behmlander assisted with the search.

The van carrying the men was towed from the scene, Nicholson said.
