A 61-year-old Brownstown man was killed in a UTV vs. SUV crash Tuesday afternoon, police report.

Larry D. Parker was pronounced dead at the scene of a crash at the intersection of County Road 200N and County Road 450W in Brownstown, according to a news release from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department.

Police were called to the scene at 4:44 p.m. on a report of a wreck between a Polaris Ranger and a Cadillac sport utility vehicle with multiple patients, including children.

When police arrived, they found Parker unresponsive with head trauma in the overturned UTV. Officers removed the top of the vehicle to perform several first aid efforts.

The crash occurred at a two-way stop. Sarah K. Hammond, 34, of Brownstown was operating the SUV and told officers she initially saw Parker driving the UTV north on County Road 450W. She said she believed the UTV would stop because it was approaching the intersection where she had the right of way.

Hammond told police she attempted to turn right at the last moment to avoid the crash but was unsuccessful.

The impact of the crash caused Parker’s vehicle to leave the roadway and come to rest in a yard north of the scene. Parker was not restrained in his vehicle, according to the news release.

Two witnesses traveling behind Hammond told police they saw Parker fail to stop at the stop sign when the wreck occurred.

Police said Hammond was wearing her seat belt and had two small children who were restrained in their vehicle.

She and the children were taken to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour for non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident remains under investigation, police said.
