Applications for anyone wishing to become a member of the Jackson County Pioneer Society this year are due Nov. 1.
New members will be inducted during the Jackson County History Center’s annual dinner Nov. 21 at Pewter Hall, 850 W. Sweet St., Brownstown.
Inductees will receive an 8½-by-11-inch certificate suitable for framing and a hand-thrown ceramic bowl made by a local artist Robb Reynolds.
To be a part of the society, applicants must be descended from a resident in any one of four categories: First Families (1820 and before), Founders (1821-1850), Settlers (1851-1880) and Builders (1881-1910).
Applications may be picked up at the Jackson County History Center genealogical library, 105 N. Sugar St., Brownstown. Volunteers are available to help you with your research. The library is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays and from 9 a.m to 8 p.m. Thursdays. Call the library at 812-358-2118.
People also will need to provide copies of sources of proof, including census records, vital records (births, deaths and marriages), land records, school records, church records, will or probate records, obituaries, military records, cemetery records, tombstone pictures, burial records, court records or naturalization records. Do not submit original documents.
The application and documents may be dropped off at the history center or mailed to 105 N. Sugar St., Brownstown, IN 47220.
