Seymour Community School Corp. sets orientation, registration and open house dates

In just a little more than two weeks, Seymour Community School Corp. will welcome back students for the 2019-20 school year.

The first day of classes is Aug. 8.

Kindergarten orientation will be at all five elementary schools from 5 to 7 p.m. July 30. Freshman orientation will be from 8 to 10 a.m. Aug. 1 at Seymour High School.

Online registration help is available from 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 1 at the high school.

Open houses will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 6 at all of the elementary schools, the Sixth Grade Center and for eighth graders at Seymour Middle School. Seventh graders will have their open house from 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 7 at SMS. The high school will not have an open house.

School meal prices

Student meal prices will not change this year and will remain $1.25 for breakfast and $2.55 for lunch. Adult meal prices will increase 10 cents to $2.15 for breakfast and $3.65 for lunch.

All students at Margaret R. Brown Elementary and Seymour-Jackson elementary schools will eat free meals because the schools qualify for the Community Eligibility Provision.

Students who typically qualify for reduced-price meals at any school will eat free, as the corporation has decided to forgo offering reduced-price meals this school year.

"We know our reduced-eligible families require financial assistance, and we have seen how impactful free meal programs can be for our lower-income families," said Stacey Townsend, director of food services. "Reduced-eligible students already qualify for full textbook assistance. We would like to offer them full meal assistance, as well."

The change will result in a loss of around $17,900 in meal revenue for the corporation, but Townsend said it will be made up from a la carte sales and catering income.
