Brownstown freshmen invited to cookout

A cookout for Brownstown Central High School freshmen, parents and school staff members will be from 4 to 7 p.m. July 29 at Brownstown Presbyterian Church, 417 N. Elm St.

Freshmen will receive a gift bag and may register to win a $25 Walmart gift card. All of those who attend will receive a free meal of porkburgers, hot dogs, baked beans, chips and assortment of desserts.

Then students and their parents will head to the freshman open house, which starts at 7 p.m. at the school. The purpose of the open house is to acquaint incoming freshmen with the layout of the classrooms, help them become familiar with their schedule and meet their teachers.

On a day that is full of school activities, it will make it easier on the budget and on the parents to drop by the cookout before attending the open house, chairwoman Kathy Ellis said in a news release.

"This is a way we can give back to our community by providing a meal for busy parents and freshmen," she said. "We want the freshmen to get a good start to their school year knowing that they are special and are being prayed for as they start a new chapter in their lives."

Brownstown Presbyterian Church has organized a cookout for freshmen since 2005.
