The Seymour Board of Public Works and Safety opened bids Thursday morning for its 2019 road maintenance improvement program.
The city received two bids with the lowest at $2,327,828.61 from Dave O’Mara Contractors Inc. of North Vernon. The second bid was $2,966,111.12 from Milestone Contractors of Elizabethtown.
An alternate bid for pavement emulsion for stabilizing Killion Avenue in the Eastside Industrial Park came in at $11,310 from Milestone and $79,547 from O’Mara.
Mayor Craig Luedeman said the board would take the bids under advisement and award the project at the June 13 meeting.
Shawn Strange, project manager with First Group Engineering of Indianapolis, said the total work was estimated to cost around $2.55 million. That includes road reconstruction and pavement overlay.
A total of 3.15 miles of road on 23 different streets throughout the city will be included in the project.
Nearly half of the cost, $1 million, will be paid for through the state-funded Community Crossings initiative, which provides Hoosier cities, towns and counties with matching funds for road and bridge projects.
Earlier this year, Luedeman said the city should be spending around $3 million annually on its roads. It currently is spending around $2.5 million compared to the $250,000 that was being spent in 2012.
The condition of Seymour’s streets is at an all-time high, however, thanks to the city’s asset management plan and the Community Crossings grant program, which allowed the city to pave more than 6 miles of streets last year, Luedeman said.
