GIRLS TENNIS
IHSAA sectional pairings announced
The IHSAA released its 2019 girls tennis sectional pairings Monday evening.
At the Seymour Sectional, Brownstown Central plays Scottsburg in the first round on Wednesday. The winner of the Braves-Warriors match plays Trinity Lutheran on Thursday while Seymour takes on Austin at the same time.
The championship match is set for Friday evening.
Cougars fall to Rebels on Monday
Trinity Lutheran will take a 5-11 record into the postseason after falling to Southwestern 4-1 Monday
Lauren Fleetwood and Cassidy Burnside picked up the lone win for the Cougars, beating the Rebels 7-6 (5), 6-4.
Abby Schult fell 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, Sarah Lemming lost 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 and Regain Cain came up short 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3.
The Cougars’ No. 2 doubles team of Katelyn Mensendiek and Flossie Cooper battled, but came up short 2-6, 7-6 (5), 10-7 at No. 2 doubles.
BASEBALL
Brownstown Central drops MSC game
SELLERSBURG
Brownstown Central fell 8-1 to Silver Creek Monday in a Mid-Southern Conference game.
The Dragons, which were the Class 3A state runners-up last spring, scored in each of its appearances at the plate.
The Braves’ lone run came in the fourth inning, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
The visitors were outhit 10-3 in the game, and just three of the Dragons’ runs were earned.
Eli Brown was the losing pitcher, working four innings.
The Braves (15-6, 4-4 MSC) host Providence tonight.
Trinity Lutheran blasts Southwestern
HANOVER
Trinity Lutheran scored runs in six of seven innings for a 13-3 win over Southwestern (Hanover) Monday.
The Cougars outhit the Rebels 13-3, with Tyler Goecker recording three hits and Jack Marksberry and Hunter Morgan each adding two. Marksberry had a home run and Goecker managed a double and triple.
Lawson Woods pitched a complete game for Trinity, recording three strikeouts, four walks and three earned runs.
The Cougars (10-8) go to Austin Saturday.
Seymour collects 11 hits in 6-3 win
HENRYVILLE
Seymour collected 11 hits in a 6-3 win over Henryville Monday.
The Owls (12-8) trailed 2-1 through three innings before scoring two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the seventh to clinch the win.
Takumi Nishiwaki led the Owls with three hits and Matthew Moore had two. Braden Christopher slammed a home run for SHS and Jake Roberts, Brayden Wilson and Ezra Barr each had doubles.
Jayden Brown got the win on the mound, tossing five strikeouts while giving up four hits, and three runs (none earned) in five innings of work.
The Owls (12-8) travel to Charlestown tonight.
SOFTBALL
Brownstown Central falls to Charlestown
BROWNSTOWN
Charlestown scored four runs in the sixth inning to bust open a 3-3 tie before beating Brownstown Central 8-4 Monday in a Mid-Southern Conference game.
Both teams finished with nine hits and two errors.
Zoe Fountain led the Braves (10-10, 4-4 MSC) with three hits and Madison Brittain had two.
Erin Singleton took the loss in the circle, pitching seven innings while recording three strikeouts, two walks and seven earned runs.
The Braves host Corydon Central to conclude MSC play tonight.
