A 61-year-old woman died Thursday morning after the vehicle she was driving left the road and hit a tree on U.S. 31 just north of Seymour, police report.

Debra J. Wetzel of Seymour was pronounced dead upon arrival at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour, where she was taken after the crash shortly before 10 a.m., according to a report from Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, public information officer for the Indiana State Police Versailles Post.

He said the investigation showed Wetzel was driving south on U.S. 31 just south of County Road 700N when her 2009 Chrysler PT Cruiser left the west side of the road for an unknown reason.

The vehicle then went back across both lanes of the highway before leaving the east side and hitting a tree, Wheeles said.

He said Wetzel was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, which remains under investigation.

Toxicology results are pending, but neither drugs nor alcohol are suspected as being factors in the crash, Wheeles said.

Wheeles was assisted by troopers Seth Davidson and Chris Lockman, Jackson County Sheriff Rick Meyer and personnel with Jackson County Emergency Medical Services, Seymour Fire Department, Redding Township Volunteer Fire Department, the Jackson County Coroner’s Office and 31 Wrecker Service.
