Man carrying crossbow near school provokes police response

Tribune Staff Reports

A Medora man carrying a crossbow near the front entrance to Medora Community Schools on Thursday morning sparked a large police response.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department initially responded to a report of a man with a gun near Medora Christian Church at the intersection of George and Riley streets around 8:08 a.m.

The man was located, and everything was secured. The schools were placed on lockdown until the man was located.

Lt. Adam Nicholson said the man told police he had picked up the crossbow at a friend’s house and was walking back home. A person saw him with the crossbow, which featured a stock that resembled a gun stock, and called police because the man was near both the school and church.

Officer Jesse Hutchinson, who was the first officer on the scene, said after talking to the prosecutor’s office that no charges were going to be filed against the man.

Indiana State Police and Brownstown Police Department also responded to assist.
