Ninth annual Ride to Remember to pass through county

The ninth annual Ride to Remember, honoring 16 fallen heroes and their families in southeastern Indiana who gave the ultimate sacrifice during the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, will be June 8 and 9.

The ride includes a stop at 2 p.m. June 9 at the Jackson County Courthouse, 111 S. Main St., Brownstown, to remember Marine Lance Cpl. Hunter “H.D.” Hogan of Norman for his sacrifice. He was killed in action June 23, 2012, while serving in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

That will be followed by a stop at 3:45 p.m. at the Vernon Cemetery to remember Marine Lance Cpl. Jacky Koenig Jr.

Each stop includes a presentation of flags and portrait, reading of the fallen hero’s biography, placement of a memorial plaque, a poem recital, prayer for the family and the fallen, placement of the rose, a 21-gun salute and playing of taps.

The ride, organized by members of the Indiana Patriot Guard Riders, will begin at 8 a.m. June 8 in Batesville and end at 5:30 p.m. June 9 in Versailles. It is open to motorcycles and automobiles and will be conducted rain or shine.

The route is 300-plus miles with law enforcement support where available. Other stops to remember the servicemen from southern Indiana who lost their lives include Sunman, Aurora, Bennington, Madison, Scottsburg, Clarksville, New Albany, Bartlettsville and Versailles.
