Cephas J. “C.J.” Masters, 88, of Crothersville, IN, passed away and was reunited with the love of his life, Mary, at 5:40 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, 2019 at the Lutheran Community Home in Seymour, IN.
Born February 10, 1931 in Garrard County, KY, he was the son of Willie Gordon Masters and Fairie (MaLear) Masters.
C.J. was living in Lancaster, KY when he was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War where he served from October 4, 1951 until July 3, 1953.
After his honorable discharge in 1953, he moved to Crothersville, IN. He worked as a route salesman for Holland Dairy for 8 years delivering milk.
C.J. was best known in the Crothersville area for owning and operating the DX Sunoco Station and C.J.’s arcade over 20 years. In 1980, he started working with his boys at Mastersbilt Race Cars.
On April 23, 1955 in Dupont, IN, he married his loving wife, Mary Etta (Morgan) Masters, who passed away on October 8, 2015. C.J. was also known to many in the community and to his friends as “Humpy”.
C.J. was a member of Crothersville United Methodist Church and the Crothersville VFW Post #1083. He enjoyed socializing and drinking coffee at the former establishments in Crothersville…Cartwrights, Town and Country Restaurant, and most recently at the VFW.
He spent many hours watching dirt track racing and following anywhere his boys were racing. Survivors include, 2 sons and their wives, Justin “Keith” (Cindy) Masters and Adrian Ray “Tader” (Jerilyn) Masters, both of Crothersville, IN, 4 grandchildren, Jonathon Ray (Ashley) Masters of Indianapolis, IN, Jeremy Keith Masters of Crothersville, IN, Jacob Kent “Jake” (Kristen) Masters of Sellersburg, IN, and Katherine Marie “Katie” Masters of Crothersville, IN, 4 great grandchildren, Aiden Keith Masters, Ariana Raye Masters, Lily Jo Masters, and Rylan Dale Martin, and 1 sister in law, Bonnie Masters of Crothersville, IN.
He was also preceded in death by 3 brothers, Leaford, Herbert, and Harlan Masters and 6 sisters, Naltie Browning, Betty King, Okney “Opal” Vanecoy, Mary Roberts, Jewell Frazier, and Thelma Jewell.
Pastors David Schill and Mark Wooten will conduct funeral services at Noon on Thursday, April 25, 2019 at Adams Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Crothersville, IN, with burial to follow at Crothersville Cemetery.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, April 24, 2019 from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Thursday and two hours prior to the funeral on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until noon at the funeral home.
