Clerk-treasurer primary features two Democrats, three Republicans

A decision by Seymour’s longtime clerk-treasurer to not seek re-election after spending nearly 28 years paying the bills for the city gave five people with political aspirations the chance go after his job.

The two Democrats on the ballot, Robin Ann Carpenter and Kristine Hackman, are political newcomers, while the three-way Republican primary election features at-large city Councilman Darrin Boas and political newcomers Dovie Stidham and Sarah Hodapp.

Republican Fred Lewis, who has served as clerk-treasurer since 1991, announced earlier this year he did not plan to seek another four-year term.

Boas, who was appointed to the at-large seat in January vacated after then Councilman Shawn Malone resigned to move out of the city limits, initially had filed a declaration of candidacy for one of the two Republican at-large council seats.

He then dropped out of that race to seek the clerk-treasurer’s job after Lewis announced his decision to not seek re-election.

Early voting began April 9 at the Jackson County Public Library, 303 W. Second St., Seymour, and will continue from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Fridays until Election Day.

As of Tuesday afternoon, 82 people out of 10,338 registered voters had cast ballots at the site. The total included 56 Republicans and 26 Democrats. Deseree McKain-Haurez, the county’s voter registration clerk, said Wednesday morning that two of the 20 or so ballots she mailed out had been returned.

A second polling site also will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays beginning Monday at the Jackson County Judicial Center, 109 S. Sugar St., Brownstown.

The Seymour site also will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. April 27 and May 4, while the Brownstown polling site will be open from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. April 27 and May 4. Both sites will be open from 8 a.m. until noon May 6.

The ballot does not include independent or Libertarian candidates, who may appear on the general election ballot.
