Southern Indiana Center for the Arts is offering Spring into Creativity, a five-week painting series featuring four unique art projects, at the center, 2001 N. Ewing St., Seymour.

Classes will be from 7 to 9 p.m. April 2, 9, 17, 23 and 30. When making art, dress the part since participants will be moving the larger pieces around during prep and painting time. There is one tuition price of $85 for the series.

“We expect this series to sell out fast,” said Jane Hays, a SICA board member. “We are happy to offer these projects at such a fantastic price.”

Class tuition includes all supplies and instructions. A minimum of four and maximum of six students is required. Attendees are required to preregister and prepay to insure their spot. The sign-up deadline is today.

Participants will begin with painting a 16-by-20-inch family pallet sign, learning how to apply stencils and stipple paint. Sign names will be required when signing up since stencils must be prepared prior to the class.

Weeks 2 and 3 will be an eye-catching wooden chair featuring large hand-drawn flowers. Students will choose a colonial red or an oxford blue background.

The first week, students will be taping off their chair and applying spray paint for the background. They also will talk about flower composition and practice painting flowers.

The second week of the chair painting, students will paint their flowers and add flourishes of their choices. Chairs used for this class have a solid back and seat, not like the sample picture provided.

Weeks 4 and 5 will be spent working on detailed acrylic paintings of a yellow finch and pansies. Each piece is on canvas paper and when finished will be placed on blank cards that are suitable for framing or giving away.

These small-scale projects will teach students how to base on acrylic paint and create shading using the tole painting floating technique and wet-on-wet blending.
