Teams begin Relay for Life fundraising

The Relay for Life of Columbus conducted a team captain meeting  Tuesday at Columbus City Utilities, where it was announced that 16 teams with 106 participants already has raised more than $14,300 for the American Cancer Society.

Goals for the year are 25 teams, 150 survivors, 400 participants, $105,000 raised, 50 ACS-CAN (Cancer Action Network) members and 100 sponsors for the event.

Relay for Life of Columbus is from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. June 22 at Donner Park. Registration is available online at relayforlife.org/columbusin. Any survivor wanting a shirt will need to be registered.

Event co-chairs Terry Kutsco and Jeff Kelley gave a mission moment for Cancer Awareness Month. World Cancer Day was Feb. 4.

Until March 12, there is a local challenge for the teams with the most sponsors and the most money raised from sponsors to receive a Relay for Life backpack. There also is a registration challenge for the team with the most new members getting a Relay for Life duffel bag.

Event leadership team members still needed are team recruiter, team coach, entertainment, fundraising, missions/advocacy, recognition and Columbus survivorship team members.

Upcoming fundraisers include:

  • Comedy benefit starring Dave "The King" Wilson at 7 p.m. March 15 at Pixy Theatre in Edinburgh; the cost for the Memory Walkers team fundraiser is $10 at the door and free for cancer survivors.
  • ESA One Step One Miracle’s Easter Bunny Breakfast at 8 a.m. April 13 at Bullwinkle’s Family Restaurant in Seymour; the cost for pancakes and a drink is $6.
  • Rumble for the Cure motorcycle ride starting at 11 a.m. May 18 at Mann’s Harley-Davidson in Edinburgh; the cost is $20 per rider or $35 for rider and passenger.

Teams also are selling luminaria for $10 in memory of loved ones or in honor of cancer survivors. The ESA One Step One Miracle team is selling them in Seymour. Contact Jan Engel at 812-528-0549.
