Owls wrestlers fall short of state berths

EVANSVILLE

It turned out to be a great season for three Seymour wrestlers, but their bids for a berth in the state finals came to an end Saturday at the Ford Center in the Evansville Reitz Semistate.

Owls junior Jake Rotert came up a tad short in his ticket-round match against Peyton Asbury of Brownsburg in a 2-0 decision at 160 pounds. Rotert had won his opening-round match against Dalton Schmidt of Mt. Vernon by pin in 3 minutes, 10 seconds.

“We felt great about Jake going into this year, and honestly, he really exceeded everybody’s expectations for this year,” Seymour coach Todd Weaver said. “If he keeps making those jumps like he did this year, he’ll punch his ticket and he’ll be in the show (next year).”

Alejandro Sachinas lost by pin in 4:32 to Owen Valley’s Bryce Bault in the first round at 195. Gabe Ramirez lost by pin in 4:41 to Center Grove’s Cameron Elmore in the opening round at 285.

Sachinas and Ramirez, both seniors, saw their respective high school wrestling careers come to an end on Saturday.

“Those guys were tremendous, and you need anchors, guys who are going to show up every day. They’re excellent role models and work hard,” Weaver said. “Unfortunately, they didn’t wrestle their best matches, but they’ve wrestled really well the last four year for us. Those two guys have been staples to our program. They’re great role models, and it is going to be very hard to replace them.”
