Seymour went into Tuesday’s gymnastics meet short-handed against Columbus North on senior night.

The Owls’ top gymnast, senior Avery DeHart, sprained an ankle last week when the team was adding new skills to their routines.

Even without DeHart the Owls posted a score that surprised many by breaking 100, but the Bull Dogs still claimed a 108.9-100.225 victory.

“Tonight we put in a lot of new skills,” Seymour coach Angie Mellencamp said. “We need to get a little bit cleaner on the beam, we need to start sticking. Vaults are looking good. They’re cleaning them up, so I’m happy with where they’re at. We still have some skills we haven’t put in. Hopefully, if everybody can maintain or bump up a little bit with bonus and great Avery back, we should be looking great.”

Mellencamp says the injury is not serious and DeHart should be ready to go by sectional time.

“We are just being over-cautious right now because we really want her back at 100-percent at sectional,” Mellencamp said. “We are going to bring her back slowly and she’s been working with our trainer so hopefully we’ll have her back by sectional. She’s a great gymnast and I think there is a place for her this year at state.”

Brett Kleber was the top finishing gymnast for the Owls with an all-around score of 33.45. She placed third in the vault (8.65) and fourth on the bars (8.375).

Nicole Elmore placed third in the vault (8.65), third in the beam (8.9) and third on the floor (8.925).

Mellencamp praised her four seniors DeHart, Kleber, Elmore and Grace Rueger.

“I never had a team where half of them were seniors, and they’ve all been with me their whole gymnastics careers,” Mellencamp said. “It’s going to be rough saying goodbye to them this year, especially with a lot of them being our point scorers. They’re all leaders and their underclassmen look up to them.”
