Sponsors and participants are needed to support the sixth annual Run for Literacy 5K organized by READ Jackson County/Plaza Latina.
The event will take place on New Year’s Day at Freeman Field Recreation Area along North State Road 11 south of Seymour.
If your New Year’s resolutions for 2019 are to be more physically active and get more involved in the community, the event is the perfect way to start the year off right, said Matt Nicholson, executive director of READ Jackson County/Plaza Latina.
Sponsorships start at $50, and there are four levels: $50, $100, $150 and $250. The highest level sponsors will have their business names or logos placed on the front of the event T-shirts, and those giving $100 or $150 will be listed on the back.
Money raised from sponsorships and registrations go to fund literacy programs in Jackson County for youth and adults.

READ Jackson County/Plaza Latina provides reading tutors, materials and programs for people struggling to read and for those who are learning English as a second language.
“We average between 300 and 400 hours a month of tutoring time around Jackson County,” Nicholson said.
The organization also constructs and installs public Little Libraries in the area, giving residents free access to reading material.
Nicholson said he is hoping for 150 or more participants to sign up for the Run for Literacy this year. People also have the option of walking the route.
The event begins at 11:10 a.m. Jan 1. The cost is $10 to enter, and online registration is available at signmeup.com/site/online-event-registration/126273.
The run is part of the Indiana Timing Race Series.
