Athlete of the week (8-13 through 8-18)

Jessica Blevins, Seymour High School, Senior

Accomplishments this past week?

“Our varsity team defeated Columbus North in four sets and Madison in three. I was happy to contribute a combined total of 29 kills in those games and 21 digs in the Columbus North game.”

How were you able to perform to your fullest potential this past week?

“We have been working very hard at practice since before the season started, and we are starting to play more as a team. I was able to draw from my years of experience in playing on school and club teams. I tried to make sure that I was always communicating with my teammates on the court.”

What did you do well?

“I was able to capitalize by hitting quick sets on the outside that the other teams were not prepared to defend. I also focused on being more aggressive when playing defense in the back row.”

Do you do anything special to prepare?

“The night before games, I try to get a good night’s sleep and drink a lot of water. I drink a bottled mocha frappuccino right before every game. I also pray and go through checklists in my head about each aspect of volleyball. The team warms up together, and sometimes, we dance to raise our energy level.”

Favorite drink: Iced caramel macchiato

Favorite food: Brisket tacos

Favorite music genre: Hip-hop and country

Favorite book: “Black Beauty”

Favorite class: Calculus

Role model?

“My sports role model is Olympic track star Allyson Felix due to her exceptional talent and work ethic. In life, my role model is my mom.”

Best advice?

“Set specific goals before beginning anything and work as hard as you can to achieve them.”

If you could travel anywhere and why?

“I would like to visit all 50 states, but if I had the chance to travel outside the country, I would like to go to Italy to see the unique landscape.”

Athletics goals (current or future)?

“Win the Hoosier Hills Conference and sectional and regional titles in volleyball. Win the sectional as a team and qualify for regional in all of my events for track.”
