Sidney Hoene and the Trinity Lutheran girls’ soccer team picked up Monday where it left off Saturday, scoring early to register a 4-0 win over Indianapolis Herron.

Hoene, who had four goals against Rising Sun Saturday, scored an unassisted goal at 33:32 of the first half to put the Cougars in front to stay.

Cougars coach Jeff Nolting said he was pleased to see six different Trinity players attempted shots against Herron. Four of them tried to score between the 20-minue and with 13-minute marks, but none of the shots went into the net.

Maddie Bell added Trinity’s second goal, off an assist from Hoene, for a 2-0 lead at 12:11.

That goal gave the Cougars some momentum as Mary Matthews and Hoene added unassisted scores at 10:30 and 7:18 to complete the scoring.

“We’re happy with the win,” Nolting said. “This was a carry-over from Saturday. Our possession minutes were good. We had eight corners and we should have scored on at least one if not two of those. That is something we need to work on. Their goalie made some nice saves.”

The Cougars had two corner attempts in the second half, plus Flossie Cooper, Hoene and Emma Goecker had strong attacks during a 17-minute span in the middle of the half but the shots were either wide of the net or the Herron goal made nice saves.

Nolting said some of the things he wanted his team to work on during the match was spacing, attacking the goal and pressuring the ball and he thought the Cougars did well in those areas.

“We did a lot of things right,” he said. “Our defense did a good job. We haven’t had a shutout in a while.”

Trinity goalie Genesis Munoz had three saves. The Cougars had 28 shots to five for the visitors.

The Cougars (2-1) will be home to Charlestown on Wednesday and will entertain Southport on Thursday.
