Jackson County resident Mary Anders and her five sisters are helping organize a rummage and bake sale to benefit the Shane and Katie Tormoehlen family of Vallonia.
The event is from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 30 at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1925, 311 S. Jackson Park Drive, Seymour.
All proceeds will benefit the family, which has two young children battling cancer. Anders and her sisters are great-aunts of the children, Kinley and Bryce Tormoehlen.
Organizers are seeking volunteers and donations for the rummage and bake sales. Donations for the rummage sale are asked to be dropped off by this weekend if possible. For information, call Anders at 812-498-2154.
There also will be sloppy Joes, hotdogs, chips and drinks available for purchase at the event.
In May 2017, at 11 months old, Kinley was diagnosed with Stage 4 Wilms tumor. She endured nine months of chemotherapy, radiation treatments and surgeries, and doctors removed a three-pound tumor and her right kidney.
On Jan. 22, the family celebrated as Kinley finished up chemotherapy treatments and was declared in remission. But Feb. 6, the Tormoehlens found themselves back at the doctor, this time for their 4-year-old son.
Bryce was diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. On March 13, he was tested again after taking intense treatments and was reported to be in remission, but he will still be taking chemo and other treatments for the next three years to help keep the leukemia away.
There have been several fundraisers organized by individuals and groups to help the Tormoehlens with hospital bills and the costs of traveling back and forth to Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health in Indianapolis.
Last month, local dentist Dr. Tamara Hiester sponsored the Tormoehlen Strong 5K Walk/Run in Brownstown, which brought in just more than $6,000 for the family.
A Tormoehlen Strong dinner/auction fundraiser is being planned for August. The public also may donate money through the Tormoehlen Strong Account set up at The Peoples Bank in Brownstown.
