A Houston, Texas-based retailer will close one of its stores in Seymour but plans to open another.
Stage Stores Inc. has plans to close Goody’s in Village Center at 1505 E. Tipton St. and open Gordmans in the same location.
Goody’s has “Store Closing” signs in its windows, and Gordmans has a location listed in Seymour on its website. A timetable for the switch and whether the number of positions would remain or change are unclear.
Kristin Whitman, a spokesperson, confirmed the transition and said the company plans to hire additional workers. The company will host a job fair from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. June 27 at the store. Whitman said an opening date has not been confirmed, but plans are to open Gordmans in August.
The Gordmans store planned for Seymour will be one of seven the company plans to operate and open in Indiana, according to its website.
Gordmans is a family department store offering clothing, footwear, home products, jewelry and beauty products.
Gordmans filed for bankruptcy in March 2017, and Stage Stores purchased it in bankruptcy court a month later, according to a news release from the company at the time of purchase.
Goody’s first operated in Seymour when it opened a store in the 2000 block of East Tipton Street in 1992 before moving to Village Center in 1997.
The store closed in January 2009, and Stage Stores purchased the chain during a bankruptcy auction, according to reports from The Tribune at the time of its closure.
The Tribune reported in August 2010 that Goody’s would return in the same Village Center location, and the store reopened in September 2010.
Stage Stores operates more than 850 stores in 42 states, according to its website.
