Hoosier country music artist Clayton Anderson will make his return to Jackson County to perform Saturday night in Vallonia.
The concert is part of an inaugural car show being put on by the Driftwood Township Volunteer Fire Department with support from Lucas Oil Products Inc.
The car show will run from noon to 7 p.m. in downtown historic Vallonia with Anderson taking the stage at 7 p.m.
The fire department will be cooking up and selling fish sandwiches, tenderloins and french fries, and the Joe Jackson Hotel Restoration Committee will be selling ice cream, snow cones, homemade desserts and drinks at Whistle Stop.
Organizers Denny Oakes and his daughter, Demi Oakes, of Seymour want the event to be a way for people to have fun and support the community.
The show isn’t about who has the best car, so no awards, only door prizes, will be handed out, Denny said.
“There’s no glory. We just want people to come out and have a good time,” he said.
The Oakeses are no strangers to car shows. Denny has helped organize major shows in the past in Seymour and Brownstown. Demi, a 2017 Trinity Lutheran High School graduate, was a founding member of the school’s car club and spearheaded its first car show last year.
There is no registration fee to enter a car or admission charge for the concert Saturday. Instead, the Oakeses are collecting canned food for the Jackson County Food Bank and donations for Red Sky Rescue.
“My dad and I wanted to do a car show where you just have to bring a donation for a charity, not just money,” Demi said. “We are hoping everyone who attends will enjoy it because the donations are going to good causes.”
Donations of canned goods will go to senior citizens in Brownstown, and Red Sky Rescue will use donations to fund its no-kill dog rescue shelter in Medora.
“We included these two organizations because some people cannot afford to buy enough food for their family,” Demi said. “My family also has rescue animals, so I think it was a wonderful idea to include them and help them out, too.”
