A former Jackson County man accused of kidnapping a girl at knifepoint and then raping her in 1999 could spend the next 30 years in prison.
That sentence is subject to Judge Richard W. Poynter’s approval and is part of a deal between Charley Hollin of Salem, Oregon, and the state to be entered at 2 p.m. today during a change of plea hearing in Jackson Circuit Court.
If he accepts the deal, Poynter would sentence 62-year-old Hollin to 40 years in prison but allow him to spend the final 10 years on home detention, monitored by Jackson-Jennings Community Corrections or another court-approved program.
Hollin had been set to stand trial Tuesday in circuit court on charges of child molesting, a Class A felony, and criminal confinement of a person less than 14 resulting in bodily injury, a Class D felony.
The charges stem from an incident in which Hollin allegedly kidnapped a 10-year-old girl at knifepoint from the former Girls Inc. building in Seymour in 1999, molested her and left her naked on a county road near Cortland.
The girl’s abductor threw her clothing out of the vehicle before she was found and rescued by a passing motorist.
Investigators said Hollin was identified as a suspect from evidence collected at the scene, including a coat and a day planner that belonged to him and DNA evidence in the car, which also had been recovered as evidence.
Hollin disappeared a little more than 16 years ago after being identified as a suspect and fled first to Minnesota and then later to Oregon, investigators said.
He was arrested a year ago at his place of employment in Oregon. He was returned to Jackson County on March 15, 2017, and booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown.
The plea deal calls for the state to dismiss the remaining count in the case and not file any other state or federal charges related to the incident and his arrest in Oregon.
Hollin also was ordered to not have any contact with the female involved in the incident and submit to an alcohol and drug abuse program for evaluation and treatment or therapy if needed.
A Class A felony is punishable by 20 to 50 years in prison upon conviction.
