Braves golfer got encouragement from father

Going into the spring of her freshman year at Brownstown Central, Regan Campbell took up the game of golf.

Campbell said it’s one of the best decisions she has made.

“My dad (Bernard) influenced me,” Campbell said. “He plays golf a lot out at Hickory (Hills Golf Club), and he was like, ‘Maybe you should join.’ I said ‘OK.’

“I’m so glad I decided to play. I enjoy trying to beat my personal score each time, and I try to have fun as much as I can with my teammates. It’s a good time.

“I enjoy the people on my team. We’re all good friends.”

Campbell said her low score at Hickory Hills is a 47, and her low score away from her home course is a 43 at Otis Park in Bedford, which she shot Sept. 7.

The sectional will be at Otis Park on Saturday.

“I shot that (43) on the back nine,” Campbell said. “I enjoy the course. I like the holes, I like playing them. The key is to hit the ball straight and keep in front of the greens.”

She said her favorite away course is actually Champions Point near Henryville.

Campbell said she feels like the strength of her game is close to the pin.

“Usually (what’s strong) is chipping and putting, but (Saturday at the MSC) it was hitting off the tee,” Campbell said. “For the most part I had good drives. My longest drives are maybe 250 (yards). I usually chip and put fairly well.”

Campbell said her favorite hole at Hickory Hills is No. 4, “because it’s short and easy. I like the par 3s. The hardest hole is No. 3 because it’s the par 5, and you can’t go left and you can’t go right.”

She said if you have a bad hole you’ve got to forget about it and play the next one.

“Just have fun,” Campbell said. “Just don’t take it too seriously. It’s all about the mental part of the game. You have to be in a good mood; you have to keep a positive attitude about everything.”

The senior prefers the 18-hole matches.

“If you have a bad front nine you can always improve the next nine,” Campbell said.

She said her lowest tournament scores are the 93, which she shot at Champions Point on Aug. 14; and the 94 she scored in the Seymour Invitational on Aug. 3.

Campbell has enjoyed attending Brownstown Central.

“I love Brownstown,” Campbell said. “I enjoy the teachers, I enjoy the people that go there. It’s just a nice school. I’ve enjoyed it and I hope I get to play college golf.”
