Sports scholarships are available in memory of Jessica Barkman.
Barkman was a 1991 graduate of Seymour High School, where she received the most valuable player award in volleyball, basketball and track and field during her senior year. She attended Indiana State University on a volleyball scholarship.
Barkman died in a traffic accident in Texas in 1997. After her death, a scholarship fund was started.
The purpose of the scholarships is to financially help young girls strengthen their athletic ability by attending sports camps, playing club ball, etc. The scholarships are based on financial need, athletic ability and a coach’s recommendation.
Last year’s recipients were Aidan Hiester (Dick Baumgartner’s Basketball Shooting Camp) and Sophia Stahl (Intensity club volleyball) from Immanuel Lutheran School; Oriana Morales and Abby Voss (all-star cross-country camp) and Emma Wood (Tipton Lakes Athletic Club Peak Performance Tennis Academy) from Seymour High School; Carlee Robinson (Thunder travel softball) and Chloe Shepherd (Indiana Elite AAU basketball) from Seymour Middle School; and Abby Schult (Prodigy club volleyball) from Trinity Lutheran High School.
