Loogootee

Loogootee basketball gets your blood pumping … and here’s the story.

If Indiana is the basketball capital of the world, then Loogootee is right where it should be on the map.

When you drive through this Martin County community, there is an old-time basketball feel to it that only a Hoosier would understand. The tradition there for basketball is incredible, and this old gym is a part of it.

As soon as you walk upon this gym, you realize you’ve walked upon something special. Built in 1927, this gym was used as a high school gym until 1968.

The Loogootee Lions did a lot of winning there for nearly four decades. In 1958, the school hired a coach named Jack Butcher. He lasted for a few years — 44.

When you walk up to this gym, there is something about it that will get your blood pumping. You’ll know you’re a Hoosier, and if you’re not a Hoosier, well, you’ll wish you were. Out of nowhere, you can hear the band, smell the popcorn and see a packed crowd cheering on the Lions. This place is special. This is Indiana.

The gym is still used for elementary events.

Huntingburg

One of the best basketball communities in Indiana is Huntingburg, a city in Dubois County.

The old gym was built in 1926 and was used as a high school gym until 1950.

Even though a new building for Southridge High School was constructed, the gym still has been used by the school’s basketball team.
