A 23-year-old woman was killed Thursday morning after the motorcycle she was riding with her boyfriend crashed south of the city.

Destiny Howard, 23, of Seymour, was pronounced dead at the scene in the 100 block of North State Road 11 by Jackson County Coroner Roger Wheeler.

Howard was riding on a 2015 Honda sportbike being driven north by Justin Smith, 23, of Seymour, according to Jackson County Officer Rob Henley’s report.

Lt. Darin Downs said the bike left the east side of the road, rolled into a fence and down into a ravine.

He said speed appeared to be a factor in the wreck. Smith and Howard both were wearing helmets.

Smith sustained leg and wrist injuries, Downs said, but he was able to administer CPR with the assistance of county dispatchers to Howard. Those efforts failed.

Wheeler said Dr. George Weir, a pathologist at Schneck Medical Center, was to conduct an autopsy Thursday afternoon at the Seymour hospital, but the cause of death likely was going to be blunt force trauma.

State Road 11 was closed for more than an hour as Jackson County Emergency Medical Services personnel treated Smith before he was taken to the hospital.

Seymour police and firefighters from Jackson-Washington Fire Department assisted. The wreck was reported at 10:18 a.m. Police say Smith had just purchased the motorcycle Wednesday.
